Tales from Earthsea and Ghibli Studio

I was recently told about the Ghibli Studio movie, Tales from Earthsea

Director Goro Miyazaki is every bit as brilliant as his father Hayao Miyazaki. I’m just taken away by all that I’ve seen from them and Ghibli Studio. While the it’s not as visual as Hayao’s movies like Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, but it still has a captivating storyline.

The best thing I find about these films is really how simply thier animated. Well, the characters anyway. The shape of the nose, eyes, mouths, are all reminiscent of the old animated tv series like RoboTech or the like. The animation is of course far beyond what it was, but the simple line art of the human characters with incredibly detailed backgrounds and scenery, amazing story telling all bring it together so wonderfully.

I really hope that someday my daugther will enjoy these films as much as I do and just love the fact that these films can span the age gap. I don’t know one adult who’s seen a Miyazaki film that hasn’t absolutely adored it, and my daugther has already watched parts of Howl’s Moving Castle and was mesmerized. Not that I let her watch a lot of television at this point…but I digress.

I sound like I’m ranting a bit but my main point here is I will never cease to be amazed by what Ghibli Studio and the Miyazaki’s are creating. There are a few other I still need to see and can’t wait to enjoy watching them.

Below is a list of films and links to Ghibli Studio movies I HIGHLY reccomend:

Princess Mononoke
Howl’s Moving Castle
Spirited Away
Nausicaa of the Wind
Porco Rosso
Tales from Earthsea
Grave if Fireflies
My Neighbor Totoro

Hellboy II

ACK! I almost freaked out last night while watching the trailer for Hellboy II. First, how freaking awesome is Del Toro? He’s freaking IMENSLEY awesome. And secondly, how freaking great is Ron Perlman as Hellboy!? I’ve always loved him but damn does he rock as that red demon monkey. Anyway, no matter how you slice it, this is going to be one of the BEST summer movies this year…wtf? BEST MOVIE AT ALL for the year.

At first, I thought Del Toro was just making a new film…and then I see that no, it’s HELLBOY II!! I started hooting and hollering the movie theater and was filled with such giddy school girl anticipation that I nearly cried. Well not really but there are only a few things in this world that get me that excited and Hellboy is definately one of them.

The unfortunate thing is, I’ve never actualy read the comic by Mike Mignola. I am however going to start adding it to the long list of mangas and graphic novels I’m currently engrossed in. Mignola’s artwork is just simply amazing and is reminiscent of Frank Miller in a way with his hard edges.

Again, I couldn’t be more excited to see this movie and am just drooling with anticipation for it to release on July 11th.

Naruto Chapter 402-SPOILER

I just read chapter 402 of Naruto. This is probably the only series I’ve the most obsessesed about besides Blade of the Immortal.

Anyway, chapter 402 concludes what’s been going on between Sasuke and his brother Itachi and all the mystery surrounding Itachi and his actions against the Uchiha clan and the Leaf village.

NOT expecting it at all…and really not expecting that Sasuke was now going to turn on the Leaf because of the history. I was very surprised to find out what the leaf had been up to and the history behind the village and the first hokage. WOW, Masashi Kishimoto never ceases to amaze me and has kept me reading and a very loyal fan for years. His story telling and just AMAZING artwork just keeps me drooling for more.

Well, anyway, I’m kind of sad now because I know Naruto and the rest of the good guys in the Leaf aren’t going to understand or even try to understand why Sasuke is now turning against the Leaf and all out hell is going to break out I’m sure. I can’t wait! But I’m also very sad at the same time for Sasuke. He’s been lead to believe one thing his entire life, and now, withing a few days it’s turned completely upside down…so can’t really blame him for the turn he’s making. I really still don’t trust Madara though…he’s a nutball it seems…especially when he’s fighting. I LOVE his character, but he definately can’t be trusted no matter what…Itachi didn’t trust him, and Sasuke shouldn’t either. I do tend to believe his story about Itachi and the Leaf’s history…but still, he’s a squirly one for sure.

So while Naruto will always be my favorite character in the manga, Sasuke is definately bringing up second in my favorite charas of the manga. I mean, can’t be helped when the last however many chapters have been dedicated to Sasuke and his need for vengeance against Itachi. Well, besides him just being him, Kishimoto has done a great job of complicating his character and situation.

Anyway, like always, I can barely wait for the next chapter to come out to sink my teeth into. I hope this story never ends…and looks like for now, it’s a far way off from ending. Which makes me giddy as a ninja school girl.

Great website a friend sent me of Phillip Toledano’s photography. He’s got some amazing stuff! I’m definately not a photography buff in any sense of the form but I love photo manipulation. Check it out!

Guess who’s rewriting the rules of gaming?

Really great story in Fortune Magazine about the ever changing world of online gaming.

I certainly don’t consider myself a gaming expert, or even know 10th of the knowledge there is to know about gaming. But being thrust into the gaming world recently, albiet third party, I’ve become more interested in it. Too bad I don’t have all the free time teenages do to learn and participate more.

A friend sent this to me since she knows I like to do graphic designing and asked if I had ever considered designing for games. Hell yes would be the answer but I’m not tech saavy enough to. I’m all self taught when it comes to graphic designing and art. I took a few community college courses on drawing but hardly anything that gave me any real value as an artist.

Until I can go back to school and learn not only more graphic software but coding and the like. In today’s world, if you’re not raised on a computer, you’re pretty much still in the stoneage.

In a way that makes me fear for my 2 years old daughter, in a way it makes me hopefull. Not to switch the subject here, but I was watching the Alaska Experiment on Discovery and as two people were leaving Alaska to head back home, the most profound yet simple statement was said. I can’t quote it exactly but it was something like this: “Everything in today’s world was made to make our lives simpler, but doing things only for necessity, like hunting, looking for water, is the much more simple way to live. Having something only because of your hard work to get it is far more rewarding than having it handed to you.”

Simply put, life is given to us all, but being able to survive Alaska or any other place where you fend for your self, makes life more of an earned right, not a gift.

Sorry, changed subjects, but it ties into the online world in general, and how most people spend more time online in social networks or gaming, than actually getting out and chopping it up.
